Keziah Ribble Butler: At the home of her daughter, Mrs. Melissa Buckles, of Garden City, lies the slight for now still in death, of Mrs. Keziah Butler, who was ninety-seven years old last August. Keziah Ribble was born in Sussex County, New Jersey, August 9th, 1811. In 1813 she moved with her family and five other families to Steuben County, New York. These six families formed a settlement and called it "The six nations." Steuben County was at that time a heavily wooded country and it became the duty of the children of the settlement to keep the steer from eating the growing crops. There were also many friendly Indians about. In 1886 she joined the Baptist church near her home, and March 8, 1827 she married Sidney Butler, also of Steuben County. In 1836 with her husband and three children she removed to Jennings County, Indiana. The journey taking three weeks by wagon. Soon after her arrival she joined the Baptist church at Coffee Creek, retaining her membership in that church more than fifty years. Her husband, Sidney Butler, died October 30, 1877, and some time after this she removed to Minnesota and has since then lived with her three daughters in Sharon and Garden City, remaining in Garden City the last four and a half years with her youngest child, Mrs. Melissa Buckles. In 1892 she joined the Christian church in Garden City where her membership still remains. Mrs. Butler was the mother of nine children, six of whom survive, living in the states of Indiana, Minnesota, and Oregon. There are thirty eight grandchildren, twenty five great, great grandchildren, and two great, great, great grandchildren, making in all nearly two hundred living descendants. Mrs. Butler's character was strongly religious and she loved good reading and music, especially hymns. She retained the powers of mind and body, almost to the very last, having a wonderful memory, not only to the occurrences long ago, but of all kinds of everyday matters. "Her children all rise up and call her blessed. Her weeping daughter said, "She was the sweetest mother that ever lived." Her last illness was of short duration, but painful. She knew and conversed with all the family until a few hours before her death, which occurred March1, 1909. The funeral services were held at the home Wednesday afternoon, March 3.
