History of the Lake Avenue Cemetery by the Crystal Lake Historical Society, .

The Lake Avenue Cemetery is the oldest public burying ground in Crystal Lake & Algonquin Township. The cemetery was laid out in 1840. According to the book, "The History of McHenry County, Illinois", which was first published in 1885, the first person buried here was Ella King, daughter of Isaac & Almina King.  The cemetery eventually became part of the large estate of Charles S. Dole. Mr. Dole traded the cemetery land to the village of Crystal Lake in exchange for allowing a road to be run down to the lake & his home. The new road changed the orientation of the cemetery. Today's front of the cemetery actually used to be the back!  Since 1840, nearly 1,200 people have been buried in this two-acre cemetery. Many of the early settlers of Crystal Lake are buried here.  The Lake Avenue Cemetery is owned & maintained by Algonquin Township.

1st Annual Cemetery Walk- Reenactment Images
On 15 Sep 2002 the Crystal Lake Historical Society hosted its first annual Cemetery Walk at the Lake Avenue Cemetery.  Costumed interpreters presented first-person stories about the life & times of Crystal Lake's earliest settlers.  The image below is owned & the explaination was written by the Crystal Lake Historical Society.
Hannah Ribble Buck (28 Mar 1803 - 10 Jan 1868) Reenactor
Hannah Ribble Buck, played by Society member Shirley McCoy, & Abner Buck were married on 9 Nov 1828 in Elmira, NY. Nine of their children were born in NY before the family came to Illinois in 1844. Two more children were born in McHenry County. Abner Buck was a farmer. His farm was located near the current intersection of Virginia Rd & Rakow Rd. The Buck farm had many animals such as turkeys, geese, chickens, Moreno sheep, cows, & horses. The family also raised crops. The animals & crops were needed to feed the large family & they were also sold for profit. The family were members of the First Congregational Church of Crystal Lake. One of their daughters, Martha, married a minister from the church.
Webmaster's Notes:
Hannah was born in NJ to James H. & Abigail Ribble. James is also buried here. Abigail's burial site is unknown at this time.
Martha Josephine Buck married Reverend James Buck. Martha is the author of the journal, "A Girl of the Civil War."
